Afghanistan has just been hit by a major earthquake of 5.9 on the Richter scale on June 22, 2022 at 1:30 am (local time). More precisely, it is the province of Paktika which was affected, a very mountainous and difficult to access region on the border with Pakistan. According to the USGS, the epicenter of this 5.9 magnitude earthquake is located at 10 km depth, which is shallow and destructive.
According to local authorities, the material destruction is enormous and because of the late hour of the earthquake (1:30 am), most of the inhabitants were caught in their sleep and unfortunately did not manage to get to safety. The local authorities report more than 1000 deaths (unfortunately very provisional). Due to the political situation in Afghanistan and the complicated access conditions in the region, it will be difficult for the international aid to be implemented efficiently.
