A team of American astronomers has just announced the possible existence of a ninth planet in our solar system. The media immediately picked up on the news. However, it is important to be cautious about this announcement. This ninth planet has not been directly observed, but is based on the interpretation of mathematical models and indirect observations.
This planet would be very far from the sun, it would not be a gas planet like Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, but rather a telluric planet like Mercury, Mars, Venus or like the Earth. It would be large (much larger than Pluto, recently classified as a dwarf planet).
There is no doubt that many astronomers will go in search of this “hypothetical planet” but the task will be far from easy because of the planet’s great distance from the Sun. We will surely hear about it.
